Former Florida State Representative Carolina Amesty has become a high-profile target of political persecution by the Biden Administration’s Department of Justice — a chilling example of federal power weaponized against an outspoken Latina pro-MAGA voice.
Amesty, a conservative firebrand winning her seat during the difficult 2022 midterm elections, quickly became a leading voice against human trafficking in the Florida state house, championing the cause of helping victims in the legislature. She did so while being an unabashed supporter of President Trump, helping to expand the GOP tent to Hispanics. When an opportunity arose to destroy Amesty’s political star, the Biden DOJ snapped into action.
In cases involving individuals with pro-MAGA beliefs, these people were cherry-picked as the targets to give the weaponized Biden DOJ an opportunity to destroy their political enemies while giving the impression they were cracking down on COVID loan corruption, killing two birds with one stone. This selective prosecution method became a hallmark of a Biden regime that disregarded the rule of law and then ran a Soviet-style lawfare operation to demoralize, debase and humiliate Trump supporters.
The federal complaint against Amesty, filed four days before President Trump’s inauguration by the outgoing Biden United States Attorney, focuses on two entities who received around$122,000 in small business loans that were obtained through the COVID EIDL program, including for religious organizations and ministries. According to a court filing, these loans were fully legitimate with zero payments ever being missed and with five of the twelve loans already being fully paid off. The collateral backing the loans exceeds their face value, and the government has not lost a single dollar on the loans. There is no victim nor any crime to speak of.
“The Economic Injury Disaster Loans in question — primarily to Christian organizations — were obtained appropriately in good faith and with no misrepresentations. Indeed, underscoring the utter lack of any criminal intent, Ms. Amesty spent over two hours on the phone with the Small Business Administration to ensure complete compliance with the law. These are not the actions of a criminal but a person who tried to — and did — get it right,” wrote Brad Bondi, one of the nation’s top criminal defense attorneys and a fervent advocate for religious freedom, in his filing on Amesty’s behalf.
“While scores of other cases with far worse allegations have been handled with declined prosecutions or civil resolutions, this prosecution, which was initiated days before the inauguration, is the quintessential example of the last Department of Justice’s weaponization to settle political scores,” Bondi added.
Fake news outlets have readily colluded with federal prosecutors to smear Amesty’s reputation and distort the facts. False and sensationalized reports amplified by biased reporting in the Orlando Sentinel sought to portray her as a criminal before any trial proceedings could be considered. This media onslaught was designed to break Amesty politically, personally, and financially. The federal case against Amesty centered around COVID loans was preceded by a state case alleging false charges of notary violations, playing on the confusion of a 90-year-old man to gin up a bogus case against Amesty that was later dropped. Amesty, referring to the earlier filed state case, which was dismissed days after her bid for re-election, said “they deliberately withheld from their own handwriting expert that [the alleged victim] acknowledged completing the form.” She added, “this expert later informed my lawyer that this crucial information would have changed his conclusion.”
“This weekend, the Orange County State Attorney’s Office dismissed all charges against me,” Amesty said after the case was dismissed. “This was a just and correct decision. I am very grateful that this legal matter is finally over, and I can look to the future to continue to help improve the lives of all Floridians.”
The Amesty case also touches upon religious persecution as her entire family has been put into the crosshairs. The Biden DOJ’s attacks extended beyond Amesty herself to the Christian university, Christian school, and ministries that are led by her family. It is a dangerous message to every faith-based leader and conservative voice in America: if you dare to challenge the globalist status quo, you will be punished harshly. The ultimatum is to shut up or have your life destroyed.
Despite these overwhelming forces, Amesty has stood firm with courage and integrity. Her ordeal is a warning to the nation: when the Department of Justice becomes a political weapon, no opponent is safe. As Trump pardon attorney Ed Martin said, the policy of the Trump administration is “no MAGA left behind.” Leaving Amesty behind after what she has been forced to endure would certainly be a grave injustice.
It is time for Interim U.S. Attorney Gregory Kehoe to end this baseless case, follow President Trump’s America First principles, and ensure that the Middle District of Florida no longer serves as a tool of political lawfare. This is not just about Amesty — restoring justice in this instance is about defending the right of every American, especially people of faith, to stand for their beliefs without fear of government retaliation.
