Electric Vehicles Run Amok In Miami-Dade County

Doral, Florida — Most Americans have come to realize that the climate change alarm is a hoax. Nevertheless, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and most County Commissioners continue to cling to this narrative in crafting public policy.

The purpose of the climate change hoax is to expand the power of globalist technocrats over individual citizens. Mayor Cava embraces this ideology, as it aligns with her values. For example, she vetoed the County Commission’s resolution to remove fluoride from public drinking water (see: Let Them Eat Fluoride). It took intervention from the Florida Legislature and Governor to remove fluoride from our water supply. The Mayor would have kept it in—"for our own good"—whether we agreed or not.

Planet Cava

Despite an estimated $400 million budget deficit this fiscal year, Mayor Cava continues to push her “Sustainable Development” programs. A flagship initiative is her commitment to replace the County’s fossil fuel-powered fleet with electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030.

Of course, electric vehicles require electricity to operate—electricity that is predominantly generated by power plants burning fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal, or by nuclear energy. The only real difference is where the fossil fuel is burned: in the vehicle or at the power plant.

The County's transition began with a $245 million investment in a new Transit Operation Center. Since then, spending has continued on acquiring electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed to support them. The goal is to electrify the entire County fleet within five years—from operational vehicles to public buses.

This policy is reckless. Electric vehicles have limited range, unreliable service, a tendency to catch fire, and long recharging times. In the event of a hurricane, the County’s EV fleet is unlikely to provide dependable emergency services. Fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles may be unavailable when most needed.

According to local reports, the County spent $120 million on electric buses, yet only a handful are operational. Chicago used electric buses in the 1960s, using pantographs connected to overhead wires. They were soon replaced by reliable diesel-powered buses.

In Miami-Dade, most electric buses broke down within a year and remain out of service due to a maintenance backlog. Then Proterra—the California-based bus manufacturer—filed for bankruptcy, causing a parts shortage. These Proterra buses also failed in other cities: batteries froze in Chicago; the fleet was mothballed in Austin, Texas; and spare parts ran out in Asheville, North Carolina. The Biden administration was forced to recall hundreds of Proterra buses due to fire hazards. Today, there are three “graveyards” of electric buses in Miami-Dade County.
In short, EVs not only perform poorly, they also pose environmental risks of their own.

Climate Alarmism and Global Governance

The climate change and “sustainable development” agendas are being used to promote global governance. Are Miami-Dade residents really ready to give up their cars and beef steaks? Unlikely. Bicycles and mass transit are no substitute for personal vehicles—and worms are no replacement for steak.

Thankfully, a local resistance is forming against the County’s climate extremism. (See: USA Against Agenda 21 Convened in Coral Gables). Maria Magdalena Estupinan continues to lead this grassroots movement.

The resistance rightly insists that science is based on empirical evidence—not consensus. Climate alarmists lack such evidence, and the science is far from settled. Carbon dioxide is plant food. There is no conclusive evidence that current CO₂ levels are excessive or harmful to the planet.

Back in the 1970s, the alarm was over “global cooling.” In the 1990s, it shifted to “global warming.” Today, it’s called “climate change,” which—ironically—happens every day. Meanwhile, polar bears continue to thrive in the Arctic.

The true objective of the climate alarmist movement is to replace free-market capitalism with a totalitarian socialist tyranny, led by so-called enlightened technocrats. Its leading institutions include: the United Nations and its World Health Organization; the World Economic Forum, led by Klaus Schwab and his 2020 “Great Reset”; and donors like George Soros, along with financial giants like BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street (see: Book Review – The Multifront War). These forces have extended their reach into Miami-Dade County.

County Waste

In addition to the failed electric vehicle push, the County Mayor and Commissioners continue to squander taxpayer money on initiatives such as:
1. Giving away “under-utilized” government properties.
2. Skipping competitive bidding for government contracts.
3. Subsidizing Marlins Stadium, the FIFA World Cup, and the F.C. Barcelona retail store.
4. Hosting progressive think tanks like the Aspen Institute.

Meanwhile, Miami-Dade streets are riddled with potholes, and the airport is falling apart. If the County government were in charge of our electric grid, the lights would go out—just as they did in woke-run countries like Spain and Portugal.
