A Boeing 767-300ER cargo plane, operating as 21 Air Flight 7598 for Amazon Prime Air, overran the end of Miami International Airport's diagonal runway, came to rest disabled at the northwest end of the airport and caught fire. The aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico earlier in the day. The incident occurred at approximately 2 pm local time.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene with over 60 units. When firefighters arrived, they saw the Boeing 767 still intact but on fire and engulfed in heavy smoke. The massive fire and resulting smoke cloud could be seen for miles across many neighborhoods throughout Miami. The disabled plane blocked movement areas on the airport, causing the FAA to put the airport on a full ground stop, closing all runways and taxiways.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travelers to prepare for significant delays and possible cancellations as the airport works to restore operations at a reduced capacity. Local 10 reported that multiple people sustained injuries in the overrun and subsequent collision with ground vehicles, though authorities have not released confirmed numbers or details on the severity of those injuries. No fatalities have been confirmed in initial reports.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are both investigating the cause, which remains undetermined. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed: "An Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air experienced an incident while attempting to land at Miami International Airport today." The company's immediate focus is "the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved." 21 Air is an all-cargo airline with a 24/7 operations center in Miami that regularly flies Amazon Prime Air routes.
This marks the second major incident involving an Amazon-contracted Boeing 767 with ties to Miami operations. On February 23, 2019, Atlas Air Flight 3591, also a Boeing 767 cargo jet flying for Amazon, crashed into Trinity Bay near Houston, Texas, killing all three crew members aboard. The repeated involvement of the same aircraft type on Amazon cargo routes raises questions about maintenance and operational oversight that federal investigators will now be pressed to answer. Airport officials expect partial resumption of flights later in the day, but the full extent of disruption to Miami's commerce and travel network remains unclear.
