For years, Maria Bartiromo put the Chinese Communist Party on American breakfast television and refused to treat it as a trading partner with manners. Gordon Chang was the regular hammer: fentanyl as policy, surveillance as standard procedure, shipyards and banks as arms of the Party, “unrestricted warfare” as the operating system rather than a book title. Viewers who watch Mornings with Maria did not need a classified briefing. They needed a Senate that believed the same broadcast.
Instead, they got the McConnell line, then the Thune handoff, and a midterm season in which America First keeps hitting the same wall: process, “we don’t have the votes,” and a Republican conference more anxious about Trump’s temperature than about Beijing’s.
Peter Schweizer put the Chao–McConnell commerce on paper in Secret Empires. The Times later traced the same skeleton. James S.C. Chao’s Foremost Group is a New York shipper that built a great deal of its fleet in Chinese state yards, including CSSC—the dual-use giant that also works for the PLA Navy. Policy banks helped finance hulls. Cargo, especially iron ore, fed Chinese steel. James and Angela Chao took board roles in that state-industrial world. Angela sat on the Bank of China. That is not a family restaurant with a supplier in Shenzhen. That is a private American fortune sitting inside the credit and steel complex of a rival regime.
In 2008, James Chao gave Mitch McConnell and Elaine Chao a gift disclosed only as $5 million to $25 million. Relatives stacked more than a million into McConnell’s political machinery. Schweizer’s inference was the one MAGA still considers the only adult inference: you do not need a handler if you can threaten the yards, the loans, and the charters. A Senate leader whose household wealth rose with that commerce has a built-in reason to keep China policy inside the velvet rope.
Elaine Chao was Labor secretary under Bush and Transportation secretary under Trump. A watchdog found she used office resources in ways that touched family interests. DOJ turned a blind eye. In June 2026, while McConnell was hospitalized, she was already in China on a “long-planned” philanthropic calendar and met CCP leader and Vice President Han Zheng. Chang’s nightly brief is that the Party uses every point of contact. MAGA is not required to indict her as an agent to notice that the contact never stops.
The conspicuous part is not that two conservatives talk about China. The conspicuous part is the split-screen. On one channel, Chang tells the country the Party is in a people’s war by other means—chemicals, capital, campuses, ports, boards. On the other, the men who actually schedule the Senate treat China risk as a thing you manage so markets and families do not get upset.
McConnell’s late record is not “I work for Xi.” It is worse for MAGA purposes: tariffs get the institutional frown, America First gets the lecture about isolationism, Ukraine stays the moral test, and the Senate remains a place where nationalist economics goes to be housebroken. That is the posture of a man whose world still runs on the old Pacific—alliances, trade lanes, and no sudden moves that would strand a dry-bulk fleet.
Thune is the continuation, not the conversion. Republicans passed over Rick Scott and installed McConnell’s whip. Trump’s world called him “Mitch’s boy.” He then did the job: keep the parliamentarian, keep the filibuster, tell the president the SAVE America Act does not have sixty votes, and spend the midterm year explaining why the voters’ mandate cannot be executed at the speed the voters want.
September 2026 is not a seminar. It is an election. Trump has said that without a citizenship-to-vote bill he will be the last Republican president. Thune’s answer has been arithmetic and custom. The conference wants Trump to “focus on the midterms,” meaning affordability talking points and fewer public fights, while the structural items—election integrity with teeth, ending the 60-vote choke—remain on the shelf. That is how an opposition party inside the governing party runs out a clock.
MAGA does not have to prove a Central Committee memo to Thune’s desk. The CCP thread that matters is cruder. Beijing’s method has always been elite capture plus time: finance the hulls, flatter the family, capture the schools, and wait for the institution to defend itself against its own voters. Bartiromo’s set described the method in plain English. The Senate described the method as “stability.”
Chang can be over-certain. CCP Collapse dates have slipped. Trump himself has waved Chang off when a deal with Xi was on the table. That does not retire the warning. It clarifies the class divide. Dealmakers want a usable China. The base that watches morning business TV wants a confronted China. McConnell’s heir is still in the first camp.
No public record shows the Party owning Mitch McConnell or John Thune. The record shows a family shipping empire braided into Chinese state industry while that family sat at the apex of Republican power, and a successor who will not break Senate procedure to finish what America First keeps winning at the ballot box. If the midterms go badly, the official story will be Trump’s mouth and the price of groceries. The unofficial story writes itself: the loudest anti-CCP hours on television was never allowed to become the operating system of the Senate. MAGA will have to live with it and hopefully just go away.
