West Palm Beach, Florida - I am uniquely tied to the state of California. My husband loved this terrain and would have settled us there, but with my ties to Latin America, it was just too far away. Having visited the land of the fruit and nuts annually since 1991, the compromise in 2006 was to buy a second home in Huntington Beach. I know this state far better than Florida. Over three decades, I’ve witnessed its decline like the proverbial frog in the pot. Now it’s boiling over.

Although Ronald Reagan is rightly remembered as a great President — a transformative leader who restored American confidence and defeated Soviet communism — he made one critical misstep with lasting consequences: immigration reform. In 1986, with Democratic House Speaker Tip O’Neill and a divided Congress, Reagan signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) into law.

The deal was intended to be a grand compromise: amnesty now in exchange for border enforcement later. In theory, it would legalize approximately 3 million undocumented immigrants — mostly agricultural and blue-collar workers, many of whom lived in California — while securing the border and penalizing employers who knowingly hired illegal labor in the future.

But here's the fatal flaw: the enforcement never came. The amnesty provisions were implemented almost immediately, but the promised employer sanctions and border security measures were either underfunded, ignored, or weakened by court challenges and political resistance. Instead of stemming illegal immigration, IRCA signaled to the world that America was open for entry — and soft on consequences.

California, in particular, became a magnet. The state’s massive agricultural and service industries relied heavily on low-cost labor, and unrestricted immigration was tolerated — even encouraged — under the argument that it was “essential” for economic sustainability. Over the next few decades, waves of new arrivals transformed California’s political, cultural, and economic landscape, turning what had once been a Republican stronghold into a deeply blue state.

I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided, and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past.

Patrick Henry - American Revolutionary

Ironically, Reagan’s deal, made in the spirit of bipartisan cooperation, laid the groundwork for a broken immigration system that has only grown worse — with rising numbers, lax enforcement, and entrenched political gridlock. This, we can all see playing out on TV’s across the nation.

What’s not widely acknowledged is that many of the immigrants granted amnesty were likely registered as Democrats. For many Spanish-speaking immigrants, “Democrat” simply sounds like “democracia,” and few are informed about the deeper ideological differences between the parties. Once on the voter rolls, their vote-by-mail ballots became ripe for harvesting — a process that can be easily exploited to sway elections.

If Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsome, Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi are the poster children of what that system produces, one has to wonder: what else is lurking under the hood?

☕ Wake up and smell the coffee

In California alone, the watchdog group United Sovereign America, analyzing the 2022 voter rolls, uncovered nearly 1 million phantom voters, 2.2 million with invalid addresses, and a voter discrepancy of 162,742 votes — enough to influence outcomes in tight races.

Now, Democrats dominate the political machinery of California — controlling its economy, institutions, and cities. Historically, California has been a bellwether, often foreshadowing national trends. Unless action is taken now, the rest of the country may find itself on the same path within a decade. That has always been the plan with the unrestricted immigration policies enacted by the party of the ass. Worse yet, the so-called “asylum seekers” have been imported to destroy America from within.

Pallets of cinderblocks do not get deposited randomly in protest zones. The civil unrest we’ve witnessed in Los Angeles is not organic—it is carefully planned and orchestrated by the State of California itself, left-leaning agitators, criminal cartels, and Marxist-aligned politicians. These efforts have been covertly funded and coordinated through a network of intelligence-linked actors, including CIA operatives and billionaire-backed cutouts tied to Soros, Gates, and Singham. Even more troubling, NGOs such as the Coalition for Humane Immigration Rights are deeply involved—sustained by generous government grants (paid for by us, the taxpayers) and private funding pipelines like the Million Voters Project. The illusion of grassroots activism is just that—an illusion.

The Trump administration has shown notable restraint by not invoking habeas corpus. Pray the National Guard deployment succeeds in quelling this coordinated civil unrest without requiring further erosion of our collective civil liberties. That said, if the situation continues to spiral, no one should be surprised if such a measure is ultimately called upon. After all, this is an invasion, a weird mixture of terrorism and insurrection with a militia that intends to harm.

I often wonder how different our future might have looked had I relented and made California our permanent home. I love the land—but I’m grateful I stood my ground and chose sunshine over fool’s gold. It used to be rare to spot California license plates here in Florida. Not anymore. My only hope is that the next wave of escapees sets their sights on other red states—and spreads their politics and wealth somewhere else.

“The California of my youth no longer exists... mass illegal immigration, identity politics, and a bankrupt state government have transformed it into something unrecognizable.” Victor Davis Hanson — Historian and California native.
