Last month, Fox 13 TV news (Tampa Bay) reported that the prehistoric arapaima fish, native to the Amazon, are also now at a private fish farm in Arcadia, FL, east of Sarasota.
The site is called Jurassic Jewels, with a resort-style theme, and it recently opened.
The arapaima can grow up to 400 pounds. "Snake-like, hard-scaled, and acrobatic," the arapaima was described as by the Fox 13 journalist.
Herb Fritch, owner of Jurassic Jewels, bought the 140-pond fish farm in Arcadia, after a number of trips to the Amazon "chasing" the arapaima.
An indoor-outdoor fishing pond is being completed as the arapaima are sensitive to the cold.
The Fox 13 journalist said that this place is the only place in the US to catch an arapaima.
