The State Russian Museum has carried out the restoration of Ivan Aivazovsky’s The Ninth Wave (1850) before the artist’s big retrospective opens on October 16.
Work on the painting’s restoration began in June. The painting will be shown in the museum’s Benois Wing as part of the upcoming retrospective of works by Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky opening on October 16. For 120 years the painting has been part of the collection of the State Russian Museum, with only minor work being done to conserve it, reported ArtNews.
The painting is based on an old maritime legend that the 9th wave after a night of a storm is the biggest and most powerful one in a row of waves. The scene is depicted after a night of a storm with the sun rising up from behind the sea.
