Republican 2024 presidential candidate Nikki Haley has been vying for a two-candidate head-to-head matchup in New Hampshire's primary on Tuesday, January 23, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis delivered just that by announcing Sunday afternoon that he was "suspending" his campaign followed by his endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
DeSantis admitted he “had disagreements” with Trump, and emphatically stated Trump is “superior to the current incumbent,” meaning President Joe Biden.
"It's clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance," DeSantis continued. "They watched his presidency get stymied by relentless resistance, and they see Democrats using lawfare this day to attack him."
The Florida governor announced his decision to drop out on social media X.
The Florida governor took a swipe at former United Nations ambassador and former two-term South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
"I signed a pledge to support the Republican nominee, and I will honor that pledge," the Florida governor continued. "He has my endorsement because we can't go back to the old Republican Guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents."
"The days of putting Americans last, of kowtowing to large corporations, of caving to woke ideology are over," added the former candidate.
"I want to say to Ron. He ran a great race. He’s been a good governor. And we wish him well. Having said that, it’s now one fella and one lady left," said Haley to her supporters on the campaign trail in Seabrook, New Hampshire.
DeSantis was "all in" for Iowa caucuses as he visited all 99 counties and received endorsements from top Iowa Republicans. He had hoped that effort would propel him to a strong showing going into New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries, but that was a pipedream in an otherwise retail-political state.
DeSantis' distant second place finish behind Trump, and barely beating Haley in the Iowa caucuses was seen as a major disappointment.
The New Hampshire primary is in 2 days, and Nikki Haley is the only candidate left in the race that has any polling within 30 points of Trump.
