Monroe County Florida Supervisor of Elections has their first Republican candidate in over 35 years. Sherri Hodies of Sugarloaf Key filed to run the position today at 4:30pm just as the weekend approaches. So far we know she will be running against Democrat Ron Saunders and according to an article by the Keys Weekly on September 29, 2023 Key West resident Margaret Romero had been asked to consider running, however she stated that she plans to announce her decision in January 2024.

This Constitutional office is a bipartisan race however in these fueled political times many residents will be paying close attention to party lines. Ron Saunders has been clamoring for the Republican vote and attending any event he can gain access to including but not limited to the Republican Executive Committee Christmas Party the day after Ms. Hodies filed to run. His inadvertent request has been denied by their Chairwoman Rhonda Lopez. Mr. Saunders has even attended a recent funeral for an REC member and campaigned with attendees, the attempt was not received well. This comes on the heels of Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsey providing his endorsement along with a County Commissioner, we have not seen any other endorsements as of yet.

In talking with Sherri Hodies she states that she would prefer obtaining multiple endorsements from her fellow citizens instead of a few locally recognizable names because she prefers working with and for the people of her community. Ms. Hodies has an extensive background in Human Resources working for an internationally recognized corporation and has two bachelor's degrees in Business and Human Resources. She became a permanent resident of the Florida Keys a decade ago. We wish Ms. Hodies all the luck in her race!

Harry Sawyer was the Republican Supervisor of Elections just 16 years ago. How quickly those that didn’t live here forget.
