For over 60 years, the United States has grappled with the consequences of failed policies toward Cuba.  From JFK’s disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion to Reagan’s Mariel boat lift, Clinton’s visa concessions, and Biden’s inaction in the face of a hurricane-ravaged island, it is abundantly clear that a new strategy is required to free Cubans from the oppressive yoke of communism.

While the Cuban people may not yet be prepared for democracy, they are unquestionably ready for liberty.  The Florida Delegation of Elected Representatives must take decisive action and craft a comprehensive plan for President Trump to execute, once and for all, to liberate Cubans from the tyranny that has ensnared their island for 65 long years.

Secretary of State Rubio, Representatives Salazar, Gimenez, and Diaz-Balart must demonstrate their unwavering commitment to securing freedom for their compatriots by presenting a plan that artfully combines diplomatic pressure with resolute determination.  Tariffs and embargoes, strategically implemented, can serve as the silk glove that conceals the iron fist of resolve.

These politicians must capitalize on the unique opportunity presented by the current administration and learn from the errors of the past, such as the Bush administration’s failure to adequately plan for Iraq’s future following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.  American taxpayers have shouldered the burden of political failures for far too long and now is the time to rectify this by emancipating millions of impoverished Cubans and welcoming them into the 21st century alongside us.

The era of excuses and classified secrets has come to an end.  The Florida Delegation must act now, with transparency and unwavering determination, to put an end to the suffering of the Cuban people and usher in a new era of liberty and prosperity for our neighbors just 90 miles from our shores.  The eyes of the nation are upon them, and their actions in this pivotal moment will be etched in the annals of history.  The time for decisive action is now, and the Florida Delegation must rise to the occasion and deliver the long-awaited freedom that the Cuban people so desperately deserve.

To remove the corrupt communists from power in Cuba, the Florida Delegation can take the following measures:

Implement targeted sanctions and embargoes on key individuals and entities within the Cuban government and military, cutting off their access to resources and weakening their grip on power.

Support and fund Cuban dissident groups and pro-democracy movements, providing them with the necessary resources to organize and mobilize against the regime.

Engage in a robust information campaign, utilizing radio, television, and social media to expose the Cuban government's corruption and human rights abuses while promoting the benefits of democracy and freedom.

Work with international allies to isolate the Cuban regime diplomatically and economically, pressuring them to enact meaningful reforms or face further consequences.

Once the communist regime is removed, the following steps can be taken to instill democratic ideals into the Cuban population:

Airdrop copies of the American Constitution, translated into Spanish, across the island to familiarize Cubans with the principles of democracy and individual rights.

Establish a comprehensive education plan for Cuban schools, focusing on civics, history, and the importance of democratic values.  This plan can include training for teachers and the development of new curricula.

Create a shadow cabinet composed of respected Cuban exiles and dissidents committed to democracy and capable of running a transitional government elected by the Cuban diaspora worldwide.  This cabinet can work closely with the U.S. and the international community to ensure a smooth transition to democracy.

Encourage the formation of political parties and civil society organizations to foster a vibrant and diverse democratic landscape.  Provide technical assistance and funding to help these groups establish themselves and engage in the political process.

Organize and supervise free and fair elections with many candidates, ensuring that all Cubans can participate in choosing their leaders and shaping their nation’s future.

Implement economic reforms to promote free-market principles, encourage foreign investment, and create opportunities for Cuban entrepreneurs.  These reforms include privatizing state-owned enterprises, establishing property rights, and reducing bureaucratic red tape.

Provide humanitarian aid and assistance to help Cubans rebuild their lives and communities after decades of communist rule.  This assistance can include access to healthcare, housing, and other essential services.

It’s time for Representative Salazar to stop making trips to Cuba for whatever reason she goes and stop making up bills for illegal immigrants to have amnesty and get to work to free the country of her ancestry.  It’s time for former Miami-Dade County Mayor and current representative Gimenez to stop making photo op appearances on Fox Business Maria Bartiromo’s show and get to work on this plan. It’s time for Representative Mario Diaz-Balart to know that the Lincoln-Marti schools all over Miami-Dade County are not just window-dressing for his Hialeah constituents but building blocks to free his family's homeland.  Finally, Secretary of State Rubio can use USAID the way it was intended and not fund rappers and prostitutes in Cuba the way the Biden Administration had, but direct that money to democracy and liberty-starved Cubans.  By implementing these measures, the Florida Delegation can be crucial in liberating Cuba from the shackles of communism and guiding the nation toward a brighter, democratic future.

Now is the time!

The Mariel boat lift was in 1980 during the Carter administration.

The ball is in the court of Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio.
