Last Sunday afternoon, grassroots conservative groups, Citizens Defending Freedom, the Voter Registration Battalion of the Election Integrity Brigade, and National Americans of Faith Alliance, conducted a voter registration drive at Harvest Church in North Miami. The church is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America. The Gospel Echo group organized this event with Pastor Andrew Sedra. This church is located in a traditionally Democrat neighborhood of Miami-Dade County.
Despite only about 33% of Miami-Dade’s registered voters being Republican, a significant 55% supported President Trump in the past election. This suggests that at least 20% of registered voters may back conservative MAGA candidates, though they are not officially registered as Republicans. In states like Florida and Texas, where the Republican Party predominates statewide, most political action occurs in the Republican primaries. Therefore, registering as a Republican is crucial for those wishing to influence these contests.
The Republican Executive Committee in this county has been notably inactive in promoting voter registration. This inactivity contributed to several electoral shortcomings last year:
Weak Republican candidates were put forward against the incumbent Democrat County Mayor, who won decisively in the first round of the non-partisan election.
No candidates contested the long-serving Democrat State’s Attorney and Public Defender.
No challenges were mounted against four incumbent Democrat County Commissioners during re-elections, despite Trump winning in two of those districts.
Lack of support for three Republicans running for the School Board.
The conservative movement extends beyond the Republican Party, embodied by independent grassroots groups like CDF, EIB and NAFA. As Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick of the Great State of Texas stated, his priority order is: first Christian, second conservative, and third Republican.
These groups, along with other volunteers, plan to continue their voter registration efforts until the primary elections in August 2026. This period will see contested Republican primaries for key positions such as United States Senator, Governor, Attorney General and Congressmen. Non-partisan elections for County Commissioners and School Board members are also scheduled.
The Voter Registration Battalion of the Brigade is dedicated to providing Republican registration opportunities not only for unregistered U.S. citizens but also for those currently registered as Democrats or with No Party Affiliation.
Special Legislative Session Called in Florida
Internal divisions within the Florida Republican party have been underscored by Governor DeSantis’ recent call for a special session to tackle immigration enforcement and election integrity. Running for President again in 2028, DeSantis aims to maintain momentum from the “Trump Effect” by adopting a strong stance on these issues. Vice President Vance, alongside former President Trump, appears to have an edge for the next Republican presidential nomination. DeSantis hopes to remain competitive, possibly seeking the vice-presidential nomination to provide geographic balance on a ticket with Vance from the Rust Belt. Another contender for vice president from the Sun Belt is Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Florida’s legislative leaders, Senate President Albritton and House Speaker Perez, both term-limited and not seeking other public offices, have shown little enthusiasm for these issues, reflecting a lack of interest from their statewide donor base and key sectors such as agriculture. However, pressure from grassroots conservatives seems to have finally prompted the leaders to call the special sessin, which starts this week, ahead of the general legislative session scheduled for March 4.
