South Florida is getting hit from two directions at once this week — king tides pushing saltwater inland from the coast while a parade of afternoon thunderstorms dumps rain from above.
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for coastal Miami-Dade County through Tuesday afternoon, followed by a Coastal Flood Statement extending through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Miami. Low-lying roads, parks, and lots face repeated inundation during high-tide cycles, with isolated road closures expected.
The weekend's king tides were the hardest hit. Hollywood Beach saw some of the worst of it — video circulated of water covering the Broadwalk and reaching car doors on surrounding streets. The city of Hollywood spent the weekend deploying blockades and flood panels, but residents reported that even areas behind the new South Lake seawall took on water as storm drains backflowed and groundwater rose.
"Groundwater where we thought we were safe. We're not safe," one South Lake resident told CBS Miami, after recording video of water erupting up through the drainage system on her street.
Ian Jarret, who has run Dahman Market on Hollywood Beach for 25 years, said Saturday's flooding was the worst he has seen in a quarter century. He put out sandbags — but the waves went straight over them.
"I knew that there was going to be king tides this weekend so I prepared bags Saturday, but it wasn't enough bags to withstand what came Saturday," Jarret told CBS Miami. "Saturday it was the first time in my 25 years here that I've seen that much flooding."
Tuesday's Storms Add To The Misery
Tuesday brings another round of afternoon thunderstorms, with the National Weather Service putting the rain chance at 70%. The heaviest activity is expected between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., when brief heavy downpours could complicate commutes and compound already-saturated conditions in low-lying areas of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
The pattern does not ease quickly. Wednesday carries a 60% storm chance. Thursday jumps to 80% as stronger easterly flow returns. Friday through Sunday remain breezy and unsettled, with highs near 88 degrees and recurring storm chances through the weekend.
What Residents Need To Know
The National Weather Service and Miami-Dade emergency managers are urging residents to stay alert through the week. Key advisories:
- Avoid driving through flooded roads — water depth is often impossible to gauge from a vehicle
- Do not drive around or through barricades — road closures are placed where flooding is most dangerous
- Allow extra travel time throughout the afternoon hours
- Check NWS Miami for updated flood advisories before heading out
King tide season in South Florida typically runs from September through November. With a wet week already underway, residents across the coastal corridor from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale should expect more of the same before conditions stabilize.
