Doral, Florida — This Saturday, Generation Z social-media influencers led thousands of protesters in front of the National Palace in Mexico City. Generation Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2012, the generation following the Millennials. The protests turned violent, riot police deployed tear gas, and at least 120 protesters and officers were injured.

Similar protests erupted across the country, from Tijuana in the north to Oaxaca in the south. Demonstrators demanded an end to criminal violence, corruption and abuse of power, and called for greater security and the rule of law.

The immediate trigger was the assassination of Carlos Manzo, the reform-minded mayor of Uruapan in the state of Michoacán, west of Mexico City. Mayor Manzo had openly challenged the criminal cartel that dominates his state. For that, he was murdered at the beginning of this month—shot dead at a public event celebrating the Day of the Dead.

The National Palace is the residence and workplace of President Claudia Sheinbaum. She has declared that opposing the cartels falls “outside the rule of law” and constitutes a form of fascism—an upside-down logic reminiscent of George Orwell and progressive Democrats in the United States.

President Sheinbaum is a creation of the cartels. Her predecessor and mentor, President López Obrador, embraced the criminal syndicates. He used their financial support—along with funds diverted from the federal energy monopolies Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos) and the CFE (Comisión Federal de Electricidad)—to fuel the growth of the political party he founded: Morena, the Movement for National Regeneration.

Morena won the presidential elections last year, securing two consecutive six-year terms in the presidency. The party now dominates federal and state offices, and last year amended the federal constitution to undermine the legitimacy of the judiciary.

President López Obrador described his policy toward the cartels as “Hugs, not Bullets.” In practice, he surrendered to the cartels in exchange for the funding necessary to build a dominant political machine. Today, Mexico is effectively a narco-state.

President Sheinbaum follows the policies of her predecessor and political patron. Her slogan, “No to Violence,” is her justification for refusing to order federal authorities to confront and prosecute the cartels. She claims this stance upholds the rule of law and preserves peace. She also reminds the public that previous presidents who fought the cartels only increased the death toll.

Sheinbaum now alleges that the protesters are being pushed by her right-wing opponents—and by foreign forces, meaning the United States. Many of the demonstrators waved “One Piece” pirate flags, a symbol Generation Z has adopted for protests against criminal violence, corruption and abuse of power.

Senior figures, including former President Vicente Fox and business magnate Ricardo Salinas Pliego, issued public messages supporting the protesters. A 65-year-old real-estate agent who traveled from Pátzcuaro in Michoacán observed simply: “The state is dying.”

Generation Z organizers have circulated a manifesto on social media claiming to represent Mexican youth and calling for an end to criminal violence, corruption and abuse of power. If only it were so easy. During her presidential campaign, Sheinbaum called for the closure of the Basilica of Guadalupe—one of the most important symbols of Mexico’s Roman Catholic faith. She has also supported the Communist regime in Cuba by recently sending free shipments of petroleum to ease the energy crisis in that prison island.

Mexico Is a Narco-State

President Sheinbaum recently held a press conference claiming that waging war on drug traffickers is a “fascist” approach that violates their rights. She declared such a war “not an option,” stating:

1. “First, because it is outside the legal framework. All these people from the right who use the words ‘rule of law’ and defend the war against the narcos—the war against the narcos is illegal. Because, like I said, it’s permission to kill without any trial.”

2. “Second, it did not do anything in the past but raise the number of murders in Mexico, and the level of violence. These authoritarian calls to go back to that are a call to fascism.”

Mexican Federal Senator Lilly Téllez has responded: “Trump is right. Mexico is ruled by cartels. He is not lying—it’s the truth, and the people of Mexico know it.” She added: “It doesn’t shame us, the good Mexicans who are honest, hardworking, and principled. It exposes the Morena government.”

Téllez is a leading voice in the opposition National Action Party, which produced Presidents Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón. The party has traditionally represented Roman Catholic, middle-class constituencies.

President Sheinbaum, in effect, works for the criminal cartels that traffic drugs and people into the United States.

As this column has previously argued, over the medium term—which is approaching rapidly—the only viable defensive option for the United States may be the creation of a buffer republic composed of Mexico’s northern border states: the Republic of North Mexico (República del Norte Mexicano). This republic would help protect the United States and provide a secure base for reformers within Mexico itself.
