Mexico’s ruling MORENA party turned its back on Ruben Rocha Moya, the Governor of Sinaloa who is accused of being a drug trafficker, just 24 hours after he returned to his post. This is the second time in months that Rocha Moya has abandoned the Governor’s seat that he has never resigned.
Yesterday evening, Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya announced that he would be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the governor’s office in order to keep the well-being of MORENA above his personal interests.
This is what happened in April: The U.S. Department of Justice charged Ruben Rocha Moya, the governor of Sinaloa, and nine other people close to him with conspiracy to traffic drugs and other crimes that use weapons. The indictment of the alleged Sinaloa Cartel members, who allegedly use their political power to carry out drug trafficking activities, also made Rocha Moya a fugitive from justice in the U.S. far right, according to the federal government of Mexico, whose president Sheinbaum has been until now.
Mexico’s Interior Secretary, Rosa Isela Rodriguez, declared on Saturday morning that Rocha Moya “acted unilaterally” and didn’t consult the federal government on his return to office. Shortly thereafter, all the MORENA state governors from the country issued a joint press release distancing themselves from the indicted governor. By Saturday afternoon, President Sheinbaum also added her own sharp rebuke to Rocha Moya.
The case shows the extent to which there has been an infiltration by the narco-state into the government. Rocha Moya has not been arrested nor did he step down from his position. He simply went on an indefinite leave. Meanwhile, the federal indictment for drug trafficking conspiracy issued by the DOJ against Rocha Moya still stands, and there is nothing U.S. law enforcement can do to force his extradition from Mexico.
Sinaloa has been one of the bloodiest states in the country ever since the fractured remnants of the Sinaloa Cartel began to fight for control following the 2024 arrest of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada. Now, a power struggle within Mexico’s government could turn into a game of musical chairs with the Sinaloa governor’s office, thanks to Washington and Mexico City failing to establish a clear line of what it means to be a cartel member and hold public office.
