Advanced drones are rapidly being deployed by Mexican drug cartels, and the possibility that returning fighters from Russia-Ukraine could transfer drone skills from the battlefield to use by criminal organizations is beginning to be a concern to U.S. officials.
Drone warfare techniques that can evade jamming as well as larger drones that can carry more explosive material are of increasing interest to the cartels. There are even reports that some Colombian fighters who fought in Ukraine are being recruited by the cartels to train their own drone operators.
Mexican intelligence has identified that several of the drug cartels are operating large drones capable of lifting very heavy payloads. Additionally, armed groups in Colombia are operating an increasing number of weaponized drones.
For now, U.S. and Mexican authorities say that they are struggling to keep up with drug cartels' evolving tactics to use drones for attacks, as the crime groups continue to modify their tactics.
