Great Britain is shrinking toward the old English core — a state that looks more like Alfred the Great's kingdom than a union spanning three other nations. The map has not moved. The consent has.
Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland are not gathering to enlarge the liberal project in London. Their break is a conservative act in the older sense: nations choosing their own law, border, and interest over a centre that treats the Union as a delivery system for its foreign and domestic creed. Open-ended migration, industrial decline dressed up as virtue, and a foreign policy that lectures allies while losing leverage — that record is what the meeting in Cardiff is answering.
The three separatist polities are not asking Westminster to be kinder. They are preparing to leave it. That is alignment with Conservative instinct, not Liberal management: keep the country you can govern, drop the one that will not be governed from Whitehall, and stop pretending a failing center is still "Great."
If they go, Britain becomes Minor Britain — England plus the memory of a larger flag. Alfred built something that could last. A Union that cannot hold its nations has already started the retreat.
