Brevard Public Schools has won an important arbitration case against in an action brought by the Brevard Federation of Teachers.
The situation has been characterized by those attempting to transition children without informing parents as just a 'nickname' issue. After speaking with BPS we can confirm the behavior was much more than that, with the teacher admitting a transitioning agenda with the student.
Comments from the school:
In April of 2025 a parent came forward with a complaint that a teacher, Ms. Calhoun was calling a female student by a male name. We investigated the accusation. The teacher admitted to repeatedly and consistently referring to the student by a male name. Ms. Calhoun also admitted to knowing it was a violation of state statute.
The superintendent did not renew the teachers contract.
The Brevard Federation of Teachers challenged this decision in a grievance. The arbitrator ruled that the superintendent had the absolute authority not to renew the contract.
