Doral, Florida - Miami-Dade County Commissioner Oliver Gilbert published an article earlier this month. In this article, he claimed that the shooting of Renee Good, in Minneapolis on January 7 this year by a federal law enforcement officer, was not justified.
He pointed out that the use of force is lawful in such a case only when a reasonable officer would believe that it is necessary to stop an imminent threat of serious bodily harm or death. According to the Commissioner, this legal standard was not met by the facts in this case.
The Commissioner failed to mention in his article, however, that the officer who shot Ms. Good, while she was driving her car toward him, was in fact struck by her car. That may be why he was the only officer present who fired at her while she was driving her car towards him.
The officer who fired his weapon was taken to a hospital after the shooting. He was hit by the car driven by Ms. Good, and suffered bruising and internal bleeding to his torso. He was released from the hospital the same day.
In cases like this, physical facts and evidence matter, but Commissioner Gilbert has left a key fact out of his analysis. Accountability requires a consideration of all the relevant facts in the case.
