Miami, Florida - President Trump announced that he plans to eliminate the federal gasoline tax to lower prices while the war with Iran lasts. Someone clearly made some poorly done calculations regarding the Iran war, but we trust in a well-balanced government team.
Canadian mining giant Sherritt suspended its operations in Cuba, apparently due to President Trump’s executive order that will not allow partnerships with Cuban government enterprises.
President Trump traveled to China last week, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, United Nations Ambassador Michael Waltz, and Director of Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. A very important trip that can be highly successful if all the points are played well. God help them!
Kari Lake, who was appointed to lead Voice of America, received a new appointment as United States Ambassador to Jamaica. We wish her every success.
Today marks exactly 65 years since my arrival in Miami, thinking the trip would last 30, 60, or at most 90 days. No one could have convinced me it would be for more than a year, let alone 65 long years. The misfortune of Cubans is historic. A people abandoned to their fate and betrayed by those we believed were our friends. Fortunately, through effort, work and the passion of decent people, we were able to survive and rebuild our lives, achieving what few imagined. We built a new city and achieved impressive successes in every sector — successes that have been universally recognized. Now what remains is to achieve the liberation of an island of slaves. That too will be accomplished with God’s favor. And our gratitude to a wonderful country, the United States of America, for allowing us to excel in a competitive world. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Delcy Rodríguez jumped when asked in Europe about Trump’s statements that Venezuela could become the 51st state of the United States. I don’t think any Venezuelan would want that for their country, but you never really know. I believe Venezuelans want democracy and freedom, and to send Delcy and her little brother off to some European country where they have many souvenirs. Let María Corina reach Caracas and hold free elections. Many months have already passed, and Venezuelans are tired of waiting.
Baptist Health in South Florida announced that its Grand Gala will be held this year at the Loews Hotel in Miami Beach on October 24. Baptist has broken attendance records in recent years, surpassing other organizations.
Spain could lose Renault car production in two provinces, affecting nearly 6,000 employees. The union has not reached an agreement, and the French manufacturer may move production to another country. The wonders of Pedro Sánchez’s socialism!
Kevin Warsh was confirmed as the new Chairman of the Federal Reserve, effective May 15. It is hoped that the leadership change will improve relations between the U.S. executive branch and the Federal Reserve. However, Mr. Powell’s desire to remain in the organization will not be healthy for the future. We shall see!
Trump rejected Iran’s peace proposal, calling it completely unacceptable after waiting 10 days for a serious response. Those who still believe there is any possibility of peaceful arrangements with Iran are going to have to “take a four-hour nap.”
The American Auto Association projects a record 45 million people traveling in the U.S. for Memorial Day, with 39 million doing so by road.
One hundred Republican and Democrat Congressmen sent a letter to President Trump asking him to request the freedom of Jimmy Lai — the Catholic Hong Kong media tycoon — during his meeting with Chinese Communist leader Xi Jinping. The letter is signed by, among others, leaders from both parties in the Senate.
Our Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, officially reported that the United States had offered Cuba one hundred million dollars in humanitarian aid, and that the Cuban government rejected it. The Cuban government is not interested in the well-being of the suffering Cuban people. They are only interested in the millions of dollars that, with the help of GAESA, the military’s business group, they hide in bank accounts in half a dozen tax havens around the world. It is a true disgrace and an absolute sacrilege. How long will this abuse of the Cuban people continue?
Jaimito says to a friend: “My dad hasn’t cut his hair in 15 years.” His friend replies: “Why? Does he like long hair?” Jaimito answers: “Noooo, because he doesn’t have any!”
