Grove Isle, Florida — Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison bought eight houses in Palm Meadows Estates, Boynton Beach, for household staff, including tutors for some of his children. The homes are about a half-hour from his Manalapan estate, not next door to it. The purchases, made in 2023 through an LLC and reported only recently, totaled nearly $10 million. Florida has clearly become a magnet for the rich and powerful.
The Texas race for the United States Senate does not look comfortable for Republicans, who have dominated that state for years. Democrat James Talarico has raised extraordinary sums—more than $68 million through June 30, including a record first-quarter haul for a Senate candidate in an election year. Most of these donations came from California, New York and other progressive precincts. Republican Ken Paxton is being hit hard by Talarico’s advertising. Talarico once said, in a longer conversation, “I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity,” then said he is drawn back by the teachings of Jesus. Ads have used that line without the rest of the answer. Other attacks attribute to him the claims that Christianity has done more harm than Islam, that Jesus was a radical feminist, and that white men are America’s greatest terrorist threat. Those lines are circulating in the campaign; some are clipped from longer remarks. Gentlemen, tie your shoes the other way!
Judge Judy, famous for 30 years on television, said something that weighs more than two heavyweights in a pizza-eating contest: if you do not like the United States, go back to your country of origin. Nobody is forcing anyone to stay. Keep that in mind. There is no Berlin Wall around America.
Alina Habba, the lawyer long associated with Donald Trump, married Turkish businessman Turhan Mildon over the last weekend of September. The wedding was at the renovated Waldorf Astoria in New York, heavy with flowers and expensive by any account. Congratulations, Alina.
While President Trump was meeting China’s president, Senator Ted Cruz was accusing Beijing of working with Iran. Life is full of surprises.
Starting this week, Florida’s minimum wage is $15 an hour. With housing and food costs where they are, the author calls the increase necessary. Unfortunately, a higher minimum wage decreases opportunities for entry-level positions, thereby increasing unemployment among the least equipped for work, and helping to create a permanent underclass.
Cilia Flores, Nicolás Maduro’s wife, was dealt a blow when prosecutors rejected her request for house arrest. They argued that she posed a serious risk to witnesses and that home confinement would be too dangerous. She remains in maximum-security detention ahead of a 2027 trial.
Charles Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother, has published a book about his sister that is raising welts. Diana remains, alongside Margaret Thatcher, one of the most loved figures in modern Britain. Only Prime Minister Andy Burnham and the rest of the Labour Party seem to dislike Thatcher. In the book Charles records Diana telling him that she suspected her husband was in love with his valet, among other painful claims. We will never know the full truth of those comments. In any event, King Charlie Three Sticks is no Defender of the Faith, which is one of his titles.
In his United Nations speech, President Trump called Cuba “an absolutely failed state” and said it “will fall.” On Saturday he said he believes Cuba and the United States can settle their differences without military force on the battered island. Remember that Trump is first and foremost a businessman, and is always looking to make a deal. Cuba has been a failed state since at least 1940, when it adopted a progressive constitutional arrangement.
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, said her negotiations with the Trump team were well advanced and positive. Just as well. Sheinbaum is Mexico’s second consecutive Communist President, after Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, and the drug cartels control at least half of the national territory.
Cindy Crawford’s son, only 27, died last Sunday of a suspected drug overdose. Very sad.
Without much warning, chef Michelle Bernstein announced on social media that her Coral Gables restaurant, Sra. Martinez, would close that same week. She said she would keep the space and announce what comes next. She is one of the most talented chefs in the city, and her croquetas have been a weakness for many. If Café La Trova has done so well in a less glamorous location, why not repeat the formula?
La Sponda restaurant is now open inside Grove Isle. It is simply sensational. Daniels’ team runs it, the food is first-rate, the room has a view you do not get elsewhere, and the sunsets are worth it. The prices are high.
In August, President Trump said that he gave his complete support to Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar for the fantastic work she has done. She sits on Foreign Affairs and Small Business committees. Since then, Salazar has attacked the Trump administration for excessive enforcement of immigration crimes. Salazar is a RINO, but the local Republican party protects incumbents, no matter their positions, and stifles competition. Our sincere condolences to the family of Carlos R. Blanco, owner of Sunshine Bottling (Iron Beer, Materva, and the rest), who died unexpectedly after a heart episode while driving. Condolences also to the employees and executives of that popular company. May he rest in peace.
