On April 9. 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order (EO) 14269, Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance. It’s purposed to revitalize the American maritime industry, which to Joe Bag O’ Donuts means building more ships. Sure, but it’s also about checking our adversary’s maritime ambitions, not accommodating them.
Which is why the new EO also directs development of a strategy “to secure arctic waterways and enable American prosperity in the face of evolving arctic security challenges and associated risks.” That’s great, but there are many more relevant waterways to secure than just those of the Arctic.
Case in point - the waters off the West coast of Chile, which if Beijing’s ambitions to acquire deep water ports there are left ignored, will become a superhighway for the unrivaled transport of Chilean lithium and copper straight to mainland China. So, what? Well, Chile has the largest reserves of lithium in the world. Given that China is an emerging near-peer adversary, it’s clear that restricting Chinese access to that lithium would be of vital national interest of the United States.
And if something is vital, it’s rational to secure it. Here’s how to do deny the CCP’s BRI’s chokehold in Chile: President Trump gains control of the Chilean port project. The US gains access to a strategic port and access to vast lithium reserves. Currently, FIVE (5) foreign countries are courting CopiaPort-E project owners to secure control of this port projects: 3 from the CCP, 1 from Russia, and 1 from Turkey. But none from the United States…
In order for President Trump to Restore American Maritime Dominance, the United States must control vital ports, and in Latin America, the most important space on the chess board is the Chilean deep-water port project CopiaPort-E (2).
