Today I begin La Esquinita with a personal note: My husband, Fausto Díaz-Oliver, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 6 at Jackson Memorial Hospital after suffering two heart attacks during a minor operation. Fausto had overcome many heart problems thanks to the skill and knowledge of his cardiologist, Doctor Alex Ferreira, who saved his life over 14 years ago.
Fausto was a wonderful husband, exemplary father, and proud grandfather and great-grandfather. In his businesses over the years, he was a skilled negotiator, friendly, and generous with his employees. As the volunteer president of the Big Five Club, he built—together with the cooperation of its directors—the much-needed Clubhouse.
During his presidency, the most important social and patriotic events in the city were held, and international figures such as Raphael, Julio Iglesias, Rocío Jurado, Armando Manzanero, María Marta Serra Lima, and others graced the club. Local stars also performed there, including Willy Chirino, our King of Carnival, Carlitos Oliva and Los Sobrinos del Juez, Hansel and Raúl, Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, Lisset Morales, and more. With local artists like Vicky Roig, Robertico Lozano, Concha Valdés Miranda, and others, joy and great music never stopped at the Big Five.
As a proud Cuban-American , he longed for Cuba’s freedom every day and fought to see his homeland liberated from communism. His death came as a shock, and even that very day he was joking with doctors and nurses. Now he rests in heaven with his beloved son Faustico, who died of heart failure less than two years ago. Rest in peace, my dear Fausto!
Controversies continue over the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports, and the retaliatory actions by other countries, especially China. The truth is, most countries have tried to negotiate with the United States and create a cordial atmosphere. Trump is a skillful negotiator and could lead the U.S. to a favorable economic balance. The suffering may be temporary, but the outcome might be the best thing that’s happened to America.
The popular mayor of Coral Gables, Vince Lago, was reelected earlier this month. After a tough election campaign, the people of Coral Gables gave him a solid show of support. Congratulations to Vince Lago!
Eric Adams is leaving the Democratic Party to run for mayor of New York. He will enter the race as an Independent. I believe this presents a good opportunity for a Republican candidate, as there will now be two Democrats in the race. We’ll see what happens.
President Trump’s administration announced it will extend TPS (Temporary Protected Status) for Venezuelans by another 18 months, satisfying the requests of Congresspeople Salazar, Díaz-Balart, and Giménez, who fought hard for this. A necessary measure.
There are reports that Elon Musk, leader of DOGE, will leave the Federal government in May after carrying out extraordinary work reducing unnecessary spending and uncovering fraud, theft, and all kinds of shady dealings. His work has been outstanding! Musk has helped save the United States billions of dollars.
The popular Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic collapsed, and its fall contributed to the deaths of at least 113 people who had come to hear the music of Rubby Pérez, a very popular merengue singer known for rhythms from the 1980s. This tragedy has not only saddened Dominicans around the world, but also moved people everywhere. Also killed in the accident were famous designer Martín Polanco and Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco.
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Emilio González, a Republican, announced his intention to run for Mayor of the City of Miami. Emilio held important positions in Washington and also served as city manager of Miami. Meanwhile, Democratic Commissioner for Miami’s District 5, Eileen Higgins, announced over a week ago that she would also be running for the position. Now it is expected that Joe Carollo will announce his candidacy as well.
A newly published book (Allen & Parnes, Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, 2025), claims that Barack Obama did not want Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden as the Democrat candidate in last year’s presidential election. We all believed the opposite, but apparently after Biden announced he would not be a candidate and supported Kamala, he made things very difficult for Obama.
