Doral, Florida -- Elliott Rodriguez was a trusted local news anchor for CBS News in Miami until his retirement last year. During his distinguished career, he received three Emmy Awards and four Edward R. Murrow Awards. Now he has stepped from the newsroom into politics, running as a Democrat for Florida’s 27th Congressional District against incumbent Republican Maria Elvira Salazar.

Elliott says that Washington is no longer delivering for the American people, and has abandoned the values that built this nation. Yet today’s Democrat Party has increasingly moved away from those values, embracing policies that undermine the principles that once defined America.

Elliott says that he stands for decency, opportunity, and responsibility. Yet decades of Democrat policies expanding the welfare state have weakened those very values, by fostering dependence on government rather than encouraging individual initiative and personal responsibility.

Elliott claims that immigrants are being demonized. Immigration enforcement, however, is not about demonizing anyone—it is about upholding the rule of law. The Trump administration focuses on illegal immigrants who have committed crimes. Those crimes include the brutal murders of Americans such as Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray and Rachel Morin. A sovereign nation has both the right and the duty to enforce its laws and protect its citizens from violent criminals who enter the country unlawfully.

Elliott says that citizenship is not only a right, but also a responsibility. Citizenship is far more than a slogan—it is a privilege that carries obligations, such as respect for the rule of law, loyalty to the nation, and a commitment to defend the freedoms that define America. Democrat open border policies erode the very meaning of citizenship. A nation that cannot control its borders cannot preserve the integrity of its laws or the security of its people.

Elliott says that he stands for families. Yet the Democrat Party increasingly promotes policies—such as abortion on demand and gender ideology—undermine the traditional foundations of family life. Plus Democrats have trouble sustaining families or having children.

Elliott also says that he wants to restore affordability for working Americans. Yet Democrats in Congress opposed major tax legislation supported by Republicans - - the Big Beautiful Bill - - that prevented the largest tax increase in American history. Meanwhile, inflation rose roughly 22 percent during the Biden administration, placing enormous pressure on working families struggling with the rising costs of housing, food and everyday necessities.

Elliott points out that Miami has become increasingly unaffordable for young people beginning their careers. Yet South Florida’s population boom has been fueled, in large part, by Americans leaving states such as New York and California to escape the policies of Democrat governments. They are voting with their feet.

Elliott speaks about accountability, competence and common sense. Yet Democrats have opposed national security and election integrity measures, such as requiring voter identification and proof of United States citizenship in federal elections—basic safeguards that many Americans consider common sense. Democrats have also stopped funding Homeland Security at a time when we are at high risk of retaliation by Iranian sleeper cells.

Elliott says that he supports strengthening the economy, protecting the environment, and investing in education. The American economy experienced strong growth during the Trump administration before the Covid hoax, and has begun to rebound again. Sweeping environmental proposals such as the Green New Deal impose enormous economic costs while delivering uncertain results. And in education policy, Democrat leaders remain closely aligned with teachers’ unions that resist reforms aimed at improving student outcomes.

Elliott also says that he supports Social Security, but Democrats have opposed every attempt to give workers individual retirement accounts, and opposed the creation of Trump Accounts for children.

    Today’s Democrat Party

Elliott was born in 1956 to Cuban immigrant parents in The Bronx, New York. His parents came to the United States before the Cuban Revolution of 1959, which means that he and his family never lived under communist rule.

Elliott has said, “I am against communism, I am against socialism, and I am a Democrat. My father was a Democrat.” But today’s Democrat Party is not the Democrat Party of his father’s generation.

Many Cuban-Americans remember that it was a Democrat who presided over the failed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, when Cuban freedom fighters were left without the promised air support, after the landing place was changed to a less favorable site.

Today’s Democrat Party bears little resemblance to the party that Elliott’s father knew—it is not the party of President Kennedy, and it is not even the party of President Clinton. Over the past two decades, its leadership has been taken over by extreme leftist progressives, socialists and communists.

Elliott speaks as if he were running in the Democrat Party of President Kennedy, but that party no longer exists. Today’s Democrats, however, must feel emboldened after winning the races for City Mayor last year and County Mayor two years ago.
