Florida families are closer to stronger medical freedom protections as state senators in Tallahassee prepare to move forward with key legislation, after Gov. Ron DeSantis called for an expanded special session to consider the Medical Freedom Act.

DeSantis issued an amended proclamation rescheduling and broadening the special legislative session, now set for April 28 through May 1, to include consideration of legislation expanding medical freedom, similar to Senate Bill 1756.

The bill passed in the Senate during the regular session, but later stalled in the House.

The Senate is scheduled to hear legislation identical to the Medical Freedom Act on Tuesday, April 27, in the Rules Committee. This step aims to carry the measure forward into the special session.

If you are a Florida resident, please take action and let Florida lawmakers know that you support medical freedom in Florida.

“We are hoping advocates across the state will show up and support these efforts,” said Maija Hahn, chapter leader for Children’s Health Defense Florida.

The Medical Freedom Act would provide critical safeguards for families, including:

    • A new conscience exemption for K-12 school vaccine requirements, in addition to existing medical and religious exemptions.
    • Authorization for ivermectin to be sold as a behind-the-counter medication without a prescription.
    • A requirement that parents receive specific informational materials before vaccines are administered to a minor child or when seeking an exemption.
    • Making permanent Florida’s ban on discrimination based on mRNA vaccination status.
    • Protections against forced vaccinations during public health emergencies.

“Medical freedom is vital for Florida’s families because it protects parental rights and allows us to make informed healthcare decisions without government coercion,” said Hahn.

“It empowers parents to choose what is best for their children’s health based on their own values and medical judgment.

By including medical freedom in the special session proclamation, DeSantis has given the legislation a second chance after it failed to advance in the House earlier this year.

With only a four-day window, however, swift action by the House of Representatives is now essential. Advocates are urging House members to file and move on a companion bill immediately so the protections can become law.

Florida has built a reputation for resisting coercive health policies and prioritizing individual liberties. Passage of the Medical Freedom Act would further solidify that leadership by emphasizing parental authority, transparency, and personal choice.

Time is limited. Parents and medical freedom supporters are encouraged to contact their state representatives and House leadership right away to call for action on the Medical Freedom Act during the special session.

“Parents, not bureaucrats, are best positioned to weigh the risks and benefits for their own children,” Hahn commented.

“This bill restores authority to families and ensures informed consent instead of one-size-fits-all mandates.”

If you are a Florida resident, please take action and let Florida lawmakers know that you support medical freedom in Florida.
