Rep. Byron Donalds pulled 48% in a crowded 11-way Republican primary Tuesday, locking up Trump's Florida coalition and setting up a November general election race to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. Donalds, a Naples congressman and one of Trump's earliest and most vocal congressional allies, won decisively despite a field packed with credible opponents including state House Speaker Paul Renner and Sen. Jay Collins.

On the Democratic side, former Republican congressman David Jolly won his party's nomination, setting up a general election contest between two well-known Florida political figures. Jolly — who left the Republican Party in 2018 over his opposition to Trump — will enter November as a significant underdog in a state Trump carried by 13 points in 2024.

The Democratic primary night in Florida was defined by two contrasting results. While Jolly won the governor's race, the Senate seat was captured by Angie Nixon — a state representative, Democratic Socialists of America member, and self-described socialist who defeated Alexander Vindman despite being outspent more than 16-to-1. Nixon's win moves the Florida Senate race immediately into the Safe Republican column heading into November.

For Donalds, Tuesday's win represents the culmination of a rapid political rise. First elected to Congress in 2020, he became a nationally prominent figure through his outspoken America First positions, his role in the speakership battles of the 118th Congress, and his consistent loyalty to President Trump. Trump endorsed Donalds early and campaigned for him in the closing stretch of the primary.

Florida has not elected a Democrat as governor since Lawton Chiles in 1994. Donalds enters the general election with a significant financial advantage and the full weight of the Trump political apparatus behind him.
