Alexander Vindman — the Democrats' star impeachment witness and the $16.3 million man in Florida's Democratic Senate primary — lost Tuesday night to Angie Nixon, a state representative, Democratic Socialists of America member, and self-described socialist who spent just $975,000 on her campaign. The margin was not close. Nixon won by double digits.

She will now face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November — in a state President Trump carried by 13 points in 2024.

The outcome continues a pattern stumping the Democratic establishment. One week earlier, DSA member Francesca Hong won the Wisconsin governor's primary despite similar spending disparities. The socialist wing is defeating well-funded establishment candidates in primary after primary.

Nixon has been explicit about her positions. She said she would have voted against sending aid to Israel, opposes US military involvement abroad, and has pledged to fight the Trump administration's immigration enforcement. She told WMNF radio in Tampa: "We cannot continue to send money to countries that are violating international law."

Vindman's implosion raises pointed questions about the Democratic donor class. The former National Security Council official attracted tens of millions in contributions from people who apparently believed that impeachment-era celebrity would translate into electoral muscle — in a state where Democrats haven't won a statewide race in eight years. It didn't.

The Democratic Socialists of America have now won Senate primary nominations in Wisconsin and Florida within eight days of each other. For Republicans, the general election just got cleaner. Ashley Moody now faces a candidate whose platform is dramatically out of step with the median Florida voter.

The Vindman loss also marks the end of one of the more peculiar political reinventions in recent memory. After his 2019 impeachment testimony, Vindman became a fixture on MSNBC and CNN. His Senate campaign was pitched as a repudiation of Trumpism. Florida Democrats said no by double digits.
