President Trump has appointed Jay Clayton, the newly confirmed Director of National Intelligence, to lead a newly established Super Intelligence Force that will coordinate all federal efforts to develop artificial intelligence and ensure the U.S. is the leader in AI, reports News of the World. Clayton’s appointment to the new AI Force, modeled on the Space Force, was expected after a report surfaced on Friday of a plan by the President to create an “AI Force” rather than allow individual agencies to work with AI, writes CoinTelegraph.
As SEC Chairman during the Trump Administration’s first term, Jay Clayton played a critical role in shaping and implementing financial regulation. In addition to leading the Super Intelligence Force, Clayton will continue to serve as the Director of National Intelligence, confirmed by the Senate in July to lead the US Intelligence Community. His extensive experience in financial regulation and national security will serve to be a tremendous asset in overseeing the federal government’s efforts to develop AI to ensure national security.
Trump established the new Super Intelligence Force, which will function as a coordinating body amongst all the federal agencies involved in AI. According to his announcement, the “new Super Intelligence Force will be tasked with coordinating the effort of the Federal Government to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence.” In effect, it will function as the new Space Force of Super Intelligence competing against China and all of the other countries.
Clayton will be joined by three others in leading the effort to create the Super Intelligence Force. First, there’s Andrew Ferguson, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Ferguson will help with AI from a consumer protection standpoint, and with respect to antitrust issues. Next up is Scott Kupor, the director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). The purpose of Kupor, a serial entrepreneur and well-known venture capitalist, will be to build out the workforce at the organization and to help with all organizational matters. Finally, there’s Emil Michael, the under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, and CTO of the Department of War. Michael has a long history of technology development for the military, and he will be able to assist Clayton and the others in leading the AI Force.
The announcement reflects the Trump administration’s increasing focus on AI as a competitor of interest that needs to be managed by the federal government as a national interest, as other countries, including China, are devoting substantial resources to developing AI. It is too early to tell whether these efforts will enhance or inhibit AI innovation in the US, but much will depend on the actual implementation of the new structures and how efficiently the various agencies can be brought to cooperate with each other.
