“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" (Isaiah 14:12)

Harvard has fallen a very long way since its founding and now seems determined to drag its dirty laundry through the mud of woke insanity. The most elite institution of the elites is imploding before our weary eyes.

As many are aware, Harvard was founded in 1636 by John Harvard as a school to train Puritan ministers. One of its original precepts was:

“Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider well the main end of his life and studies, to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life (John 17).”

Its long slide into heresy and secular humanism can be traced to the hiring of a Unitarian Divinity Professor in 1805. An original motto, Truth for Christ and the Church, was amputated to just Truth (or Veritas), removing the source.

As Harvard became more and more worldly – and further away from the source of all truth – its behavior worsened. In the 1920's, President Lowell responded to complaints of too many Jewish students by adopting “character” (or subjective) criteria to application evaluations with the objective of diminishing Jewish numbers – which it did, from 28% to roughly 10% by the end of Lowell’s tenure.

So, yes, Harvard has a vile, century-long history of antisemitism, which makes its recent embrace of radical pro-Hamas hatred against Jews a real head scratcher. It would be like a Jim Crow college which majored in racism now dabbling in racial politics just for the fun of it.

Which makes Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s May 22 broadside against Big Crimson a long-overdue corrective action. Her simple information demands – that Harvard share all recent information pertaining to foreign students’ disciplinary records and participation in violent protests, in threatening fellow students, etc. – had been brushed away by Harvard after the original April request. In other words, Harvard – a massive recipient of federal aid – is ready to fall on its sword to protect the “free speech rights” of violent, antisemitic foreign students and join, nay, lead the “resistance” movement against the Trump administration.

As Secretary Noem points out, it is a privilege to enroll (higher paying) foreign students, not a right.

In her tweet publicizing the letter, she wrote:

"This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus."

What I found most interesting is the last charge, “coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party.”

While Harvard has no Confucious Institute, the Chinese Student Association is one of the largest on campus and Harvard boasts the Harvard-Yenchin Institute (of much older pedigree than Confucious ones), whose focus is strongly Chinese despite its “Asian” remit. Like many an elite university, Harvard has proudly planted its flag on Chinese soil with the Harvard Center Shanghai, since 2010.

Why does all of this matter?

While exact numbers are secret, the Chinese student population is estimated between 3-4% of all students (China is acknowledged as among the top three foreign sources, with foreigners representing over a quarter of the student population). All of those students are controllable via blackmail if needed, with vulnerable family back home in China.

Money, as always, plays a large part in Harvard’s corruption. Harvard’s School of Public Health was renamed after a Hong Kong businessman T.H. Chan, with a $350 million grant coordinated by his son Ronnie Chan in 2014. The chair of Harvard’s Chemistry department, Professor Charles Lieber, was convicted in 2021 of lying about his ties to China in connection with federally funded research. Last month, in April, he became a full-time professor at a Chinese university. (Crime pays!)

All of this is public information. It will be enlightening to learn more of how Harvard has coordinated with the ChiComs, as these cases move forward.

And cases there already are, as America’s unfolding Judicial Coup encourages radical, leftist District Court judges to “temporarily stay” numerous Executive Branch actions – including a Boston judge’s stay of Secretary Noem’s order revoking the visa status of all Harvard’s foreign students due to unsafe and prejudicial conditions on campus.

Harvard’s arrogance is breathtaking. While bolstered by a $53 billion endowment – which qualifies the university as primarily a “hedge fund,” per Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, rather than a learning institution – Harvard is not only losing in the court of public opinion, but will bring down the woke university cabal about it, as the Trump Administration moves to remove tax-exempt status from not just Harvard, but all elite universities. (Provisions to this effect are included in the reconciliation bill just passed in the House.)

The case against the radically leftist university is extensive. They already lost the 2023 Supreme Court case “Students for Fair Admission v. Harvard,” proving racial prejudice in their admission policies. Big Crimson’s long history of antisemitism continues unabated. According to the City Journal, the Jewish student population is down to 9% from 20% in recent decades; a group of Jewish alumni claim the university intends to drive those numbers even lower, to below the Jewish share of the general population.

In the court of public opinion, former DEI president Claudine Gay was deservedly hounded from office after she couldn’t affirm in testimony before Congress that violent and threatening pro-Hamas, anti-Jewish protest violates Harvard’s code of student conduct. (It also came out that her dissertation was riddled with plagiarism, which in a functioning world would mean revoking her PhD and her professorship; instead she was only stripped of her presidency.)

When, in an attempt to preserve her sinecure, she wrote a letter to the Harvard community condemning the genocidal expression “from the river to the sea” (that is, Jew-free), she was rebuked in a public letter from 700 Harvard faculty members. Imagine that, 700 irate Harvard professors supporting hate speech that encourages violence!

The rot at Harvard is extensive and the institution, I would guess, is irredeemable. Interim President Alan Garber may be lifted up in the fever-swamps of woke ideology for joining the “resistance,” but is already doing permanent damage to the lame institution’s reputation – and to the whole cabal of Harvard’s peers.

I can only guess that the man – and his faculty, of whom only 3% identify as conservative – are blinded by arrogance and globalist, anti-American views. (One can already hear the wails, “We are a globalist, not an American, institution, how can you deny us our lucrative foreign students? Or our many foreign donors? Or our long-term, productive ties to the CCP?”)

I must confess that I am a graduate from the 1980's and that four generations or more of my family have attended. It is now an embarrassment to be associated with the Harvard name. To underline how far spiritually the august institution has fallen, I’ll finish by sharing the result of a class survey done for one of our reunions, perhaps our 25th, in which we were asked to name the two most influential people in our lives. Clearly, many cited their father or mother as one. And the second? While, at the time, Mao, Marx, and Barack Obama were thus honored, only 5% of my classmates responded Jesus Christ. That is a pretty good proxy, to estimate that only one-twentieth of my classmates are Christian, down from 100% at the school’s illustrious founding.

How far art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer! And we know how Lucifer also fell due to outsized pride.

Harvard has become, essentially, an enormous grifting machine. As long as its reputation doesn’t collapse, alumni and other donors will continue to pay-to-play – until they won’t.

Strategically, the Trump Administration, in confronting one pinnacle of leftist elitism after another, is doing nothing less than saving the republic by encouraging the academic playpen of the elites to implode.

Yep. Right on!

America is a Judeo-Christian errand into the wilderness, and most of our elite institutions don’t want to come along.
