Doral, Florida - - Versailles in Miami is not the opulent palace in a suburb of Paris, but a Cuban-American diner, café and bakery on the edge of Little Havana. It does not feature French cuisine, and its similarity to the original is limited to the mirrors lining the walls of its dining room. There is hardly a vegetable or green produce in sight, but plenty of rice (arroz), beans (frijoles), croquettes (croquetas), ground beef (picadillo), shredded beef (ropa vieja), chicken with rice (arroz con pollo), fried green plantains (tostones), Cuban sandwiches (sanguiches cubanos), pastries (pastelitos) and sweet expresso (café cubano).
Tuesday afternoon last week, after his arraignment at the federal courthouse in downtown Miami, and while on his way to the airport, Donald Trump’s motorcade pulled into the Versailles bakery for a quick pick-me-up. But his pick-me-up did not come from the pastries and coffee, but from the people waiting for him there. Most of these people have lived under tyranny, and all have seen it up close and personal. Tyranny starts when the authorities disregard the rule of law. See https://miamiindependent.com/tammany-hall-in-the-tropics/. They are refugees, or the children of refugees, from Cuba and other countries in Latin America. See https://miamiindependent.com/cuban-privilege-in-america-is-real/.
Thus, they understand that an essential component of the rule of law is equal treatment of each individual citizen. The Supreme Court building in Washington bears a plaque stating: “Equal Justice Under Law.” The XIVth Amendment to the Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law. The French Revolution was fought, in part, so that each citizen, regardless of his status as an aristocrat, clergyman, commoner or anything else, would receive equal treatment under the law.
By any measure, Donald Trump has not received equal treatment under the law from: (1) Federal prosecutors, who have now indicted him for his handling of documents. (2) State prosecutors, legislators, judges or juries. The District Attorney of Manhattan indicted him for a business expense dispute. In l’affair Bergdorff Goodman, the New York legislature extended the statute of limitations on a one-time basis, so that a forgetful alleged victim could charge him with sexual assault, and be affirmed by a progressive federal judge and a Manhattan jury. (3) Federal legislators, who impeached him twice for no good reason. (4) Federal bureaucrats, who sabotaged his administration. As Latin American politicians say: “To my supporters, I will give them everything; to my opponents, I will give them the law!”
Even the mainstream media denies him equal treatment, and instead engages in a permanent propaganda campaign against him, his supporters, and their principles and policies. For example, the three main broadcast networks devoted over 300 minutes covering Trump’s indictment, but zero minutes covering the Biden Crime Family. Local media reported that Trump had not paid for the food that he offered to buy for everyone present, but in fact no one ordered anything, and the food ordered by Trump’s entourage was fully paid for before they took it out on their motorcade.
Your columnist is not necessarily suggesting that Trump should not be indicted by federal prosecutors merely because Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Hunter Biden were not indicted for similar and additional offenses. Instead, all of them (plus Bill Clinton and Barack Obama) should be indicted and arraigned at the same time, concurrently. And not only them, but also others like James Comey, John McCabe, James Clapper, John Brennan and all other miscreants of the administrative state. Plus all the Antifa and BLM rioters, like the January 6 rioters. That would be equal treatment under the law.
The people of Miami recognize this injustice and support Trump because he is, warts and all, our leading champion against the totalitarian tyranny of the administrative state. In the presidential election next year, Americans are facing a world-historical crossroad: Trump or tyranny. All other issues are secondary. Last year Daniel Ortega, dictator of Nicaragua, prohibited presidential candidates from running against him, and Joe Biden is trying to do the same thing in America.
The people at Versailles bakery who greeted Trump included a Cuban-American pastor, who prayed over Trump in English, and a Jewish rabbi, who prayed over Trump in Spanish. Also present were local office-holders: State Senator Ileana Garcia, founder of Latinas for Trump; State Representative Juan Carlos Porras, a rookie legislator still in his 20’s; and County Commissioner Kevin Cabrera, head of the Trump campaign in Miami during 2020. The media was represented by Marines Moncada of Americano Media. Others included Anthony Verdugo of the Christian Family Coalition and Jorge Masvidal of UFC.
The Rubicon has been crossed in American politics by all this lawfare from progressive Democrats, the die has been cast. As Barack Obama proclaimed in November 2008, America is being fundamentally transformed, into a banana republic and a totalitarian tyranny. Trump in next year’s presidential election is the last best hope for freedom in America. Otherwise, the lamps of freedom will be extinguished through the land, and they will not be lit back up again for a long time.
Don’t Tread On Me!
Excellent article. Fabiola Santiago from the Miami Herald did an opinion piece on Trump not paying for anybody's food at Versailles. I think the people at Versailles were excited to see President Trump and nobody cared about the pastelitos.
