Doral, Florida - Donald Trump won a historic victory this week. His re-election to the presidency signaled a re-alignment similar to other great re-alignments in American political history. In 1860 we had the Civil War, in 1936 the New Deal, in 1964 the Great Society, and in 1980 the Reagan Revolution. Today’s new MAGA coalition represents Americans of all ethnicities working for opportunities to make a better life for their families.
In the process of winning a majority of the national popular vote, Trump won 55% of the vote in Miami-Dade County. This county has approximately 1,525,000 registered voters, had 72% turnout, and is around 70% Hispanic. His victory was the first by a Republican presidential candidate in this county since 1988, when Poppy Bush rode the coat-tails of Ronaldus Magnus. The tragedy of the contemporary conservative movement in America was that the Reagan legacy was taken up by the unworthy Bush dynasty. Poppy’s grand-daughter, Barbara Bush, campaigned for Quemala this year, and no members of their family endorsed Trump.
Now Trump has a created a new winning nationalist populist coalition in the conservative movement. American nationalism is not based on ethnicity and geography, like the European nationalism of “blood and soil.” Instead, American nationalism is based on ideology and belief in the American Creed, regardless of ethnicity. As for geography, America is oceans away from the Eurasian landmass.
American populism was set forth in the Constitution, adopted in 1789: “We the People.” The first Republican President, Abraham Lincoln, observed at Gettysburg during 1863 that in America government is of, by and for the people. It is not of, by or for a technocratic elite indoctrinated and credentialed by colleges and universities, and unaccountable to the people.
In contrast to Trump’s victory in 2016, however, this time he had coat-tails. He helped elect new Republican Senators not only in West Virginia and Montana, but also in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He also appears to have helped Republicans retain their narrow majority in the House of Representatives. There were also Republican gains in the state legislatures of Minnesota of Michigan.
In Miami-Dade County, Trump’s coat-tails were on full display. Republicans fielded candidates for the five county-wide partisan offices: (1) Sheriff; (2) Clerk of the Courts; (3) Supervisor of Elections; (4) Tax Collector; and (5) Property Appraiser. Each of these candidates won with the exact same percentage of the votes as did Trump, 55%, except the candidate for Property Appraiser, who received 57%. He is a long-time distinguished journalist and a former Miami City Mayor, with exceptional name-recognition. In the entire State of Florida, Trump won 56% of the vote, not much more than in Miami-Dade County.
These county-wide Republican candidates faced exceptionally aggressive, coordinated and well-funded campaigns by their Democrat opponents. Nevertheless, the Republicans prevailed, mostly due to Trump’s coat-tails. In addition, 17 of 19 Republican candidates for the state legislature in Miami-Dade County won their races.
During the non-partisan elections in August, on the other hand, the Democrat County Mayor won re-election with a majority in the first round. The Democrat State’s Attorney and the Public Defender did not even face a Republican challenger, nor did four of the Democrat County Commissioners and one of the Democrat members of the School Board.
Trump was not at the top of the ballot then.
