[Doral, Florida] Last weekend the “917 Society” held an organizational and fundraising event in Southwest Ranches, Broward County, Florida. www.917society.org. No, that is not a society for cellular telephone customers in the New York metropolitan area code. September 17 is Constitution Day. It is dedicated to remembering the day in 1787 when the Constitutional Convention signed our then proposed Constitution and submitted it to Congress for approval by the citizens of the States. Most people in the United States have never read the Constitution, although many have heard of it.
In its wisdom, during 2004 Congress provided that: “Every school and college that receives federal money must teach about the Constitution on September 17.” As many parents discovered during the Wuhan virus lockdowns, what should be taught in our public schools is often not. Ironically, Hillsdale College, which requires students to take a course on the Constitution, accepts no federal money.
The 917 Society was formed to provide copies of the Constitution (together with the Declaration of Independence) to eighth-grade students, which was when I was introduced to these documents, and is a great time to do so, and to recognize James Madison as the father of the Constitution. Next year the 917 Society aims to deliver two million copies of the Constitution to schools across our country. Of course, adults who were not taught these documents should go back and read them now, because it is never too late to start to understand and defend freedom.
The event was held in what is probably the most patriotic and conservative portion of Broward County: Weston and Southwest Ranches. These towns each have a Republican Mayor and majority of Republican Commissioners, and local Republican officeholders and candidates were heavily in attendance.
Among those in attendance stood Chris Eddy, Commissioner in the Town of Weston and candidate for the Republican nomination for Congressional District 25, against incumbent Debbie Blabbermouth Schultz. His candidacy helps to demonstrate the importance for conservative Republicans of running for local offices, so that they gain experience, credibility and name-recognition to run for higher office.
Chris Eddy served for over 30 years with the U.S. Air Force in military intelligence, including 13 years collaborating with the FBI, and received awards for his service with U.S. Southern Command. He retired with the rank of Brigadier General in 2017, left the FBI in 2019, and was elected Weston Commissioner in 2020 with the highest vote total in the town’s history, after having lived there since 2009. He is married and has two kids, his wife is his campaign manager, and he attends St. Bonaventure Church and is active in his local community.
Cook’s Political Report rates Florida’s 25th Congressional District as Solid Democrat. The incumbent, Debbie Blabbermouth Schultz, has held this office since 2013, despite having to resign her position as Chairwoman of the Democrat National Committee in 2016 for unethical behavior favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders for the presidential nomination. Debbie also survived a challenge in the Democrat primary of 2018 by Tim Canova, a local law professor, when Brenda Snipes, then Broward County Supervisor of Elections, burned the contested ballots despite a court order otherwise. Democrats play hardball!
Nevertheless, Chris Eddy believes that the 25th Congressional District is ready for a change. He has received many approaches from Democrat and Unaffiliated voters, including officeholders, who have come to believe that the Democrat Party generally, and Congresswoman Schultz in particular, have gone too far to the left, on a whole range of issues, from inflation, higher taxes and unsustainable debt, to open borders, street crime and school failure.
Chris Eddy is basing his Congressional campaign on the principles of Civility, Fiscal Discipline and Security:
Civility: He proposes to disagree without being disagreeable, and promises not to deal in lies, nor to give in to lies.
Fiscal Discipline: Our federal spending is unsustainable and is fueling the highest rates of inflation in 40 years. In particular, he opposes student loan forgiveness, and believes in shoring up Medicare and Social Security.
Security: This is a multi-faceted concept, especially when around 70% believe that America is on the wrong track, and that includes Republicans, Democrats and Unaffiliateds: (a) Economic security is under siege for most Americans. We send billions to fight the war in Ukraine, while most Americans care more about the price of eggs at Publix. (b) Education security is neglected in our government schools operated by the teachers’ unions, focusing on woke ideology instead of substantive instruction. (c) Personal security is at risk from woke prosecutors who release violent offenders without bail, and care more about criminals than victims. (d) Border security has collapsed, resulting in an unchecked inflow of illegal aliens who are receiving welfare benefits, while Americans struggle with high inflation and illegal drugs flooding our country.
In the 2024 elections, the Republican Party in Florida will have a popular local candidate running for President, whether Trump or DeSantis. Either candidate will have cross-partisan appeal and coat-tails for other Republican candidates. That uplift, plus the general disgust with the far leftward tilt of Democrat politicians, will create a favorable environment for a Republican like Chris Eddy to challenge the incumbent in the 25th Congressional District.
