Doral, Florida - Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-Florida Panhandle) appears to understand that you cannot negotiate with terrorists or with spending-addicted politicians. He voted earlier this year to make Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House based on McCarthy’s promises to restrain government spending and borrowing, and to rein in the administrative state. See: https://miamiindependent.com/congressman-gaetz-in-marathon-key/. However, McCarthy violated his promises, and chose to govern with the support of Democrats instead of conservative Republicans. In the five weeks after McCarthy reached a deal with Democrats to lift the debt ceiling, the government incurred $1 trillion of additional debt. The recent deal on a continuing resolution for 45 days is another example. Congressman Gaetz was on solid ground when he exercised his motion to vacate the chair, which led to McCarthy becoming the first Speaker in American history to be voted out of office.
Congress is now on a scheduled recess until next week, the impeachment inquiry is proceeding without interruption, and a couple of good candidates have announced their intent to run for Speaker. An interim Speaker that no one knew about is currently in charge of the House, to the extent that may be needed. All that is not so chaotic, but uncertainty and chaos is better than certain insolvency. The government debt is becoming unsustainable at $33 trillion. We are on Flight 93 over Pennsylvania.
Some people are concerned about the effects of a shutdown of the federal government for a short period, but they should have been more concerned that starting in March 2020, we shut down most businesses, schools and churches for extended periods. A government shutdown would be a good time to dismiss all those “non-essential” personnel, plus government contractors as well.
The situation in Congress with Speaker McCarthy was similar to the situation in the Texas House of Representatives with Speaker Dade Phelan (the drunk). In both legislatures, RINO leadership combines with Democrats to undermine the conservative agenda.

MAGA versus RINO
The showdown this week over the Speaker of the House is the latest battle in the war that started around 2010 between the Tea Party/MAGA conservative grassroots of the Republican party, versus the RINO professional politicians. The RINO’s have ignored the demands from the grassroots to restrain government spending and borrowing, and to rein in the administrative state. After all, the Tea Party slogans were: fiscal responsibility, limited government and free enterprise. Speaker McCarthy was part of the RINO priestly caste, and now he has been defrocked at the behest of Congressman Gaetz. Let conservative government rule in the House. Maybe they will return to regular order in the appropriations process.
The MAGA v. RINO war has seen a comeback by conservatives this year: (1) Attorney General Paxton beat the impeachment charge in Texas; (2) Congressman Gaetz knocked out Speaker McCarthy in Congress; and (3) despite all the lawless prosecutions, Donald Trump holds a majority in the polls for the Republican presidential nomination next year. In 2024, it’s Trump or tyranny.
Congressman Gaetz is now considered the frontrunner for Governor of Florida in 2026, especially because he is likely to receive Trump’s endorsement, which is probably worth at least 30% of the primary vote. Other contenders include: (1) Congressman Byron Donalds, another Trump supporter who voted to keep Speaker McCarthy: https://miamiindependent.com/latinos-for-byron-donalds-in-miami/; (2) Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Stimson, a prime RINO; and (3) Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, a likeable guy.
State Senator Joe Gruters, former chairman of the Republican Party of Florida and a Trump supporter, observed that: “Outside [Trump}, there is no question that [Gaetz] is the leader of the [conservative] base here in Florida.” See Zac Anderson, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, October 4, 2023. Amazing what a Republican politician can achieve when he gives the conservative base what they want.
