The FBI's February 2026 raids on Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) headquarters, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's San Pedro home, and a related property in Broward County, Florida, have spotlighted a collapsed multimillion-dollar ed-tech deal and potential procurement issues. The probe spans Carvalho's prior leadership at Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) but primarily centers on LAUSD's engagement with AllHere Education.

The AllHere "Ed" AI Contract

Carvalho, who joined LAUSD in 2022 after 14 years leading MDCPS, advocated for "Ed"—an AI-powered "student success coach" from Harvard-affiliated startup AllHere Education. LAUSD awarded a $6.2 million professional services contract in 2023, bypassing full competitive bidding in some accounts.

  • The district disbursed approximately $3 million before AllHere shut down operations in mid-2024, filed for bankruptcy, and laid off staff.
  • Founder Joanna Smith-Griffin was indicted on federal wire fraud and identity theft charges in late 2024, accused of misleading investors by fabricating revenue and client data.
  • The platform was never fully deployed, resulting in a significant financial loss for LAUSD and renewed questions about vetting, conflicts (including Carvalho's ties to former AllHere sales rep Debra Kerr), and oversight.

Financial and Asset Overview

Carvalho's public disclosures show substantial earnings from high-profile superintendent roles:

  • LAUSD base salary: $440,000 annually (plus benefits).
  • Final MDCPS salary: Approximately $352,000–$400,000+

Property records indicate he and his wife own at least six homes/properties in Florida (primarily Broward and Miami-Dade counties, including a valued Miami Shores residence) and one in San Pedro, Los Angeles—totaling millions in real estate value. While net worth estimates range from several million dollars based on career income and assets, federal review focuses on whether any undisclosed interests influenced district decisions.

Broader Context and Ongoing Questions

The raids have revived discussions about vendor contracting and fiscal accountability in large districts. In Miami-Dade's 2024 school board races, candidates, including Hayley Ross (a retired teacher who ran for District 3), highlighted the need for better teacher compensation, reduced administrative bloat, and stronger oversight of spending—concerns some now see as prescient amid the federal scrutiny.

To underscore calls for transparency, a fitting quote from Hayley Ross during her campaign emphasizes core priorities: "Our children need parents, not politicians—they need someone with passion and someone to fight for them." The investigation remains active, with no charges announced against Carvalho or LAUSD officials. LAUSD board discussions on his status have been ongoing but inconclusive as of late February 2026.
