Robert Lee Vander Plaats is a well known evangelical leader in the state of Iowa however he also ran unsuccessfully for Governor in the state elections going back to 2002, 2006 and 2010. Mr. Vander Plaats has recently come into the spotlight nationwide for his endorsement of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for the 2024 Presidential race. In typical fashion President Donald Trump had something to say about it!
President Trump took to his social media account on Truth Social calling out “Ron DeSanctimonious” for a payment of nearly $100,000 made to The Family Leader Foundation of which Vander Plaat is CEO. Shortly after Vander Platt accepted the funds he provided the Florida Governor his 2024 Presidential nomination. So in the words of Donald Trump, what is going on here?”
It not only appears to be a payoff to Vander Plaats in exchange for his endorsement of the Florida Governor but let’s also take into account that Mr. Vander Plaats made arrangements for a 2024 GOP Presidential unsanctioned debate at a Thanksgiving forum. One can’t help but wonder if this forum combined with an alleged payoff and subsequent endorsement is really just an exploited platform in favor of Ron DeSantis. Did Ron DeSantis pay for this production under the guise of a GOP debate?
Have we seen this same pattern of coercion by the DeSantis campaign before? Back in May reports showed 99 of the 113 GOP Florida legislators endorsed DeSantis but those numbers are beginning to dwindle. Just this month within the first week of November we had 5 Florida legislators change their support from DeSantis to Trump just days before a key Miami GOP Presidential debate making a total of at least a dozen statewide. Is Tallahassee feeling the DeSantis campaign growing weaker? Only time will tell but at this point it seems inevitable.
One thing we can be sure of, Mr. Vander Plaats will not be saying any invocations at Trump’s inauguration in January 2025!
